It’s a beautiful time of year in Logan, Utah. These are the months that allow us to forget all the snowed in winter days of last year. So it’s time to make the most of it! If you are celebrating your anniversary this summer or fall, we have just the celebration itinerary for you! Still, who needs an anniversary as an excuse to celebrate? Be spontaneous! And follow these simple steps for a romantic weekend spent in luxury characteristic of a time gone by.

Step #1 – Go for a drive
Logan Canyon in route to Bear Lake is one of the most scenic in Utah. Its steepness encourages a slower drive which, in turn, allows you to take in the surroundings and relax in the presence of your sweetie. Think you know everything about your spouse or partner? Bring along a book of questions (similar tothis one). You may learn a thing or two! Or, pick a few favorite soundtracks, roll down the windows, and enjoy a peaceful ride.

Step #2 – Arrive at Pickleville Playhouse
Once you exit the canyon, turn right on Bear Lake Blvd. You will quickly see Pickleville Playhouse on your right (map).Pickleville is a local gem, offering classic theater productions that are becoming harder and harder to come by. This season, they are showingBeauty and the Beast – a timeless tale of finding love, even in the most unlikely of places. Buy ticketshere! But, hurry quick, the show ends August 30th.

***Note: For the full experience, come early and enjoy theirBBQ. If you are looking for a romantic, intimate option, pick a restaurant closer to Logan such as Le Nonne or Elements.

Step #3 – Drive back to Logan for a romantic evening at the Anniversary Inn
Book a night at the Anniversary Inn. After your drive, you will be excited to arrive at a luxurious, comfortable suite. I recommend theMansion Suite. This suite features elegant decor reminiscent of a day gone by – you will feel like Belle herself! Though the aura of the suite will make you feel that you’ve stepped back in time, we don’t scrimp on modern day luxuries such as a jetted tub big enough for two that is place right below a cozy fireplace (turned off May 15 – October 15). The suite also features not one, but two televisions – one for the bed and one for the tub. As always, your stay comes with complimentary sparkling cider and cheesecake – a perfect way to end your night.  Your stay will be followed up with complimentary breakfast as well. You will leave feeling pampered and rejuvenated. So what are you waiting for?Book today!

An Intimate Anniversary in Salt Lake City

Many of the posts on this blog describe ways to celebrate your anniversary or plan a staycation in a grand and creative manner, taking advantages of all the local events that Utah and Idaho have to offer. Though a creatively planned anniversary is fun and exciting, sometimes the most enjoyable evening is one that involves a romantic dinner and a relaxing get-away. Fortunately for you, Salt Lake offers superb options for such a night.

emsfront

One of Salt Lake City’s most valuable gems is Em’s Restaurant. Em’s Emst2is located in the heart of downtown Salt Lake on Center Street, just below the Capitol Building. It rests in a small, cozy space that is endlessly romantic: dimmed lighting, candles, beautiful art, small tables – you’ll never want to leave. And the food, oh the food! Head Chef – Emily – is brilliant. Starting out in a much smaller space serving lunch and catering on the side, she soon found more space would be necessary as the reputation of her delicious and creative cuisine grew. She relocated to Center Street where the restaurant expanded once more into the neighboring space which provided more seating for the ever growing group of patrons. Em’s cuisine is gourmet using seasonal and local produce which means the menu changes throughout the year.

Start your meal with her famous potato pancakes served with creme Emscatering3fraiche and fresh herbs. They are delicate and savory with complex flavors that pair perfectly with creamy creme fraiche. Her flatbread with seasonal toppings is also a great choice. Follow up the appetizer with a salad. Whether you prefer something light (mixed greens with balsamic vinaigrette, croutons, and shaved parmesan) or something more hearty (roasted potatoes and caramelized onions with Italian sausage on seasonal greens, tossed with a bacon, sherry vinaigrette), she has something for you.

The list of entrees is substantial, each includes a perfectly prepared Em'st1meat (lamb, short ribs, salmon, etc.) that is paired with sauces and vegetables that are prepared to accompany the meat perfectly. For vegetarians, she has an excellent potato lasagna and nightly pasta special. Let’s just say, if she’s serving her famous house-made ravioli…you can’t go wrong. What is dinner without dessert? Em’s list of desserts presents a comforting, classic selection. Sorbets, bread pudding with caramel sauce, raspberry creme brulee, homemade ice cream served with a warm chocolate chunk brownie….is your mouth watering yet? Read more reviews here where Em’s earns 4/5 stars on Yelp!

Emst3
The best part about Em’s is the AMBIANCE. My husband and I have been there a number of times and every time we visit I feel the need to hold his hand across the table and lean over the table to engage in intimate conversation. It feels like a place where we can share secrets and exchange romantic glances – the perfect restaurant to host your anniversary celebration.

***Important Note: due to it’s popularity, Em’s recommends that you make reservations a few days in advance. Having been disappointed once when arriving at a full-to-capacity restaurant, I strongly encourage following this policy.
***Em’s also serves Sunday brunch and lunch throughout the week. I highly recommend both.

After a romantic evening spent on Center Street in Salt Lake, take a short drive to the Anniversary Inn on South Temple, just minutes away. There, book the Anniversary Inn Suite. This suite stands in contrast to the others in its classic interior. It is elegance at its finest. No frills, no distractions – just comfort. relax with your sweetheart in the jacuzzi tub for two before crawling into our king sized bed and watching a movie while a fire burns in the fireplace. Complimentary apple cider and cheesecake come with every suite. Indulge! There’s nothing wrong with enjoying “second dessert.” Let the morning greet you with a complimentary full breakfast.

Craving a classic, romantic, and intimate anniversary celebration. Reserve a night at Em’s and the Anniversary Inn on South Temple and you won’t be disappointed.

Hiking Around Boise – the Ideal Summer Staycation

Summer is the perfect time of year to enjoy the great outdoors. In the west, we oftentimes take for granted the accessibility we have to beautiful trails that wander along peaceful streams or climb impressive mountains. Especially in Idaho, where the summer heat is less intense than other locations, locals should take the time to experience the natural beauty their state has to offer before the winter snow sets in and masks it all in white. Instead of booking an expensive flight or traveling to a foreign destination, look around! With a little collaboration between mother nature and the Anniversary Inn in Boise, this weekend could easily turn into an affordable, enjoyable staycation.

Hulls Gulch caption
There are dozens of hiking trails that surround Boise and most all are worth the time and effort. However, if you’re looking for the most “bang for your buck,” I would choose Hull’s Gulch. Why? Well, I have three reasons.

Screen Shot 2014-07-19 at 5.09.26 PM

Reason #1: Accessibility:
The Hull’s Gulch trail is located less than 10 minutes from downtown Boise within the Hulls Gulch/Camels Back reservoir. Just take 8th street north towards the foothills until the pavement ends. Park in the first parking lot on your right. More details on location here.

Reason #2: Versatility
There are numerous ways to enjoy the gulch, which makes this area an ideal place to spend a Saturday with your sweetheart (and kids if they’re lucky enough to come along). Whatever your hiking experience or time frame, the gulch has an option for you. Take a look at this map to see the various trails to choose from within the gulch trail system. If you want to spend just an hour or two, pick a loop that is shorter or hike in until you are ready to start heading back to the parking lot. For the full experience, pack a lunch and hike the entire 7 mile loop. Stunning views of the city and beautiful nature scenes can be seen all along the trail.

Hulls Gulch 56532_HullsGulch2_356x267

Reason #3: Safety
The Hulls Gulch Nature Trail is reserved for hikers (restricted from bikers and equestrians though they may use other parts of the gulch) and the climb is gentle which means it can be enjoyed by everyone! Still, be sure to bring enough water as there is little shade along the trail. See other reviews of the hike here.

After a long hike, reward yourself with a night of relaxation at the Anniversary Inn in Boise. To continue the nature theme, book the Enchanted Forest Suite. There, you will be surrounded by painted murals depicting a forested area that you may recognize from your day spent in the Boise foothills. Make no mistake, you will find no wildlife or dirt trails here. Only a comfortable queen bed, TV, and luxurious jetted tub for two. We’ll even throw in a bottle of sparkling cider and a delicious cheesecake – no trail maps required. After a weekend like this, you may never want to leave Boise again.

People flock from all over the country and world to enjoy the American west – and it’s right outside your door. So, get your hiking shoes on! This weather won’t last forever.

Celebrate Your Anniversary…and Utah’s

July brings with it numerous celebrations, including Utah’s Pioneer Day, the 24th of July. On this day, we commemorate the birth of this beautiful state and honor those who founded it. Due to the occasion, “This Is The Place” State Park hosts numerous activities for all to enjoy. Whether you celebrate your anniversary in July or are just looking for a staycation, the State Park and Anniversary Inn have you covered.

This_Is_The_Place_Heritage_Park

Though “This Is The Place” State Park is usually a family destination, that doesn’t mean couples can’t join in on the fun. Typically, anniversaries consist of a romantic dinner and maybe a movie. Mix things up and take your sweetie to the Park to discover what it has to offer.

andrus-halfway-house-and-farm

pioneer-parade-during-pioneer-days-02

True to its heritage as an old pioneer town, the Park features original 19th century buildings and homes that have been relocated for preservation purposes. Barns, cabins, stores, half-way houses – it’s all there, rich in history, to explore and enjoy. The park also hosts numerous celebrations throughout the year, especially in July. On July 4th, the Park will celebrate “Liberty Days” and on July 24th, they will celebrate “Pioneer Days.” Both celebrations feature summer food, races, pony rides, reenactments, craft projects, and games. Does riding a pony or participating in a three-legged race seem childish? So what! Join the fun for a memorable anniversary.

Celebrating your anniversary would not be complete without a romantic place to stay. Following the theme of Utah heritage, book a night at the Anniversary Inn on 5th South in Salt Lake City and reserve the Wild West Suite. Cuddle next to your honey and enjoy watching a movie in the back of an old covered wagon (don’t worry, the bed is modern). Relax even further by “walking into town” through the saloon-style porch and doors to find a luxurious jetted tub. With decor true to its name, this suite will take you back in time without leaving the comfort of the present-day luxuries.

So grab your sweetheart and make this year’s anniversary one to remember. Make the most of Utah’s July festivities and let Anniversary Inn do the rest.

Travel to the Orient Without Leaving Home!

As the home of Utah State University, Logan is known as a college town, but that doesn’t mean that dining options cater only to the penny-pinching undergraduate. For a more gourmet experience suited for a night on the town with your honey, consider Takara Sushi. Takara has earned 4.5/5 stars on Yelp making them one of the most revered eateries in the area. (more reviews on Urban Spoon here)

Takara

When you look at the menu, you’ll see why. From the list of sushi options, you’ll find something for everyone. For first-timers, Takara offers the basic rolls such as California, Salmon, Cucumber, etc. (along with Sashimi and Nigiri). For the more adventurous, they have a hefty list of “Special Rolls” that include fun originals such as the “Anger Management” roll (deep fried shrimp, cucumber, spicy crab, cream cheese, and tempura crunchies + special sauces) or the “Loco Cilantro Roll” (spicy tuna, avocado, cucumber, jalapeno, topped with cilantro) – just to name a few. The impressive crowd you’ll find here – even on a weekday evening – is recommendation enough to at least check it out (see more reviews here)

Takara2

Now, for you non-sushi lovers, do not be deterred. This restaurant has it all! In addition to their array of well-named sushi rolls, they also serve noodle dishes and entrees that can please even the most timid pallet. Their list included dishes such as vegetable or shrimp tempura, beef with vegetables, and chicken and curry over rice – each served with a house salad and miso soup. You can see why Takara Sushi is a local favorite.

To continue with the oriental theme, make the weekend truly memorable by booking a night at the Anniversary Inn in Logan and request the Oriental Gardens Suite. From the exotic and ornate oriental decor to the Japanese-style murals, you will feel like you have travelled east to a different land. The entire suite is tranquil and calming. Lay with your sweetheart under the red canopy while relaxing on down pillows and comforter. The Zen garden and bonsai tree will add to the aura of relaxation – especially when enjoyed from the jacuzzi tub for two.

Feeling the need for exotic travel? Look no further than your home town. Between Takara Sushi and the Oriental Gardens Suite, you’ve planned a staycation that allows you to enjoy an oriental-themed weekend without even booking a flight.

Celebrate Your Anniversary With the Fishies

Let’s be honest, fishing is not for the impatient or the faint of heart. However, with the right gear in the right location, fishing can be incredibly exciting and even romantic. This year, surprise your sweetheart by planning a lazy afternoon picnic, set on the banks of a quiet river and enjoy your anniversary in the company of fishies.

First, you must plan a picnic – after all, what is an anniversary celebration without food?!
Option #1: Take-Out
Perhaps you have a favorite restaurant, one you frequent often together. Most restaurants have a “take-out” option, so call ahead and order a few dishes to share. Even higher-end, fancier restaurants will often accommodate requests for take-out. Imagine the surprise of pulling fillet mignon or pasta carbonara out of the picnic basket! Your spouse would go crazy. However, take travel time into consideration. There’s no use in spending money on food that will go bad.

Option #2: Make-It-Yourself
In my opinion, the simplest picnic is best. Plan a meal around delicious foods that also travel easily such as hummus with pitas or veggies, sandwiches, cheese and crackers, fresh fruit, cookies or brownies, etc. Don’t be deterred, a simple picnic can be easily made extravagant by adding a few specialty items like candied nuts, a fresh slice of pie from the local bakery, or slices of gourmet cheese from the deli counter. Pack this with a delicious sparkling beverage and wine-glasses and you’re on your way to a real special surprise.

Secondly, get the gear.
If you are interested in fishing long-term, go to a local fish and tackle store and invent in your own gear. If you’re in Boise or the surrounding area, check out Howard’s Tackle Shoppe on your way to the lake. The staff there is incredibly helpful and knowledgeable; they will equip you with everything you need at a decent price. If this fishing endeavor is a one-time adventure, check out your local fish and game organization (for Idaho, go here). Oftentimes, they will offer free lessons or cost-friendly ways of testing the waters without making an investment into expensive gear. June 14th is Free Fishing Day in Idaho – the one day a year when you can fish without a permit. See the schedule of events to find out where you can go to enjoy the days festivities.

Third, pick your location.
While the local fish and game activities are fun and convenient, it you’re looking for a romantic afternoon, get your hands on a fishing pole to share, rent a canoe and head out over the waters with your sweetheart for a truly romantic excursion. I recommend Lake Lowell. Just 30 minutes outside of Boise, this lake is pristine and heavily populated with animal life. It is conveniently located and never very crowded. It is considered a prime spot for spring fishing, so make the drive, it will be worth it.

Last, but not least, book a night at the Boise Anniversary Inn.
Anniversary Inn has just the suite to cap off your perfect anniversary: Fisherman’s Wharf. This Ruby Suite is enchanting. Nestle in next to your sweetheart in the cozy bed of a canoe (don’t worry, mattress is included!) and reminisce the days events surrounded by beautiful panoramic murals of Boise’s natural wildlife. It will feel like a continuation of the day on the lake…just without the flies or fish. After an afternoon spent fishing, you’ll be happy to relax and enjoy celebrating one more year with your beloved.

A Staycation at the Opera

Salt Lake City has always had a reputation of featuring real talent in the realm of the arts. Between the Utah Symphony, Ballet West, Pioneer Theater, and the Utah Opera, theater goers have their pick of truly excellent, local performances on stage throughout the year. If tourists from around the country are coming to Salt Lake to see these shows, shouldn’t we be taking advantage of the prolific artistic culture in Utah as locals?

butterflyPageBannerAs the 2014-2015 theater season begins this summer and fall, consider planning an “opera-style” staycation right here in Salt Lake. This year, the Utah Opera has a fabulous line up, starting with Puccini’s Madame Butterfly that begins on October 11, 2014 at Capitol Theater. As one of Puccini’s most famous works, Madame Butterfly is the tragic tale of the boundaries race and status place around love. The story begins in Nagasaki, Japan when a U.S. Naval Officer and a common Japanese woman – Butterfly – fall in love and are married. Soon after the marriage, the naval officer leaves for the United States and does not return for years. When he does return, he brings with him his American wife in hopes to adopt the son he shares with Butterfly. The encounter yields devastating consequences. Written in 1900, the opera has influenced many other works including Schonberg and Boublil’s Miss Saigon. With elaborate sets and opulent costumes, this masterpiece is not to be missed.

To cap off your enjoyable staycation, book a night at the Anniversary Inn on South Temple, just blocks away from the Capitol Theater. You and your sweetheart could forgo the stress of finding a parking space and take a romantic walk down South Temple admiring the sites along the way. To carry on the opera theme, reserve the Phantom of the Opera Suite. With painted murals from the musical combined with ornate decor reminiscent of an opera house, you will find yourselves the star of the show as you and your honey spend the evening relaxing in grandeur. And you didn’t even need to leave your home town!

Tickets to Madame Butterfly go on sale July 20th – check the Utah Opera site for further updates. The opera runs October 11, 13, 15, and 17 at 7:30 pm and on October 19 at 2 pm. The opera is sung in Italian with English subtitles projected above the stage. Under 30 years of age? Check out these amazing discounts from Utah Opera! For the full season preview, see this video. Subscriptions to the Opera can be bought here.

Who Says You Have to Be an Adult to Celebrate an Anniversary?

Anniversaries are like fine wines, they get better with age. With each coming year, the relationship you have with your companion grows deeper and sweeter. Unlike birthdays, anniversaries are celebrated without wincing at the reminder of age. The more you have, the more successful your marriage is … and the more there is to celebrate.

Still, the celebration of anniversaries can grow dull year after year if the way you celebrate this special event becomes too routine. So, spice things up this year by returning to the days when carelessness ruled and time was not an issue – become teenagers again by celebrating your anniversary at the local amusement park!

timthumb.php

There are plenty of amusement-style centers all over Utah, but if you live in or close to Logan, Utah, we recommend the Cache Valley Fun Center. Located in North Logan, this place has it all! From roller skating to billiards, from laser tag to bowling, you two will find plenty of ways to remember what it was like to be young and reckless. They even offer Country Dancing on Monday and Wednesday nights – free instruction included.

boots

The facility is clean and offers all these attractions at incredibly low prices (visitors give the facility 4.2/5 stars). If you and your sweetheart wanted to make an entire evening (or afternoon) of it, you could roller skate, play a game of pool, bowl, and challenge each other to a game of laser tag – all for under $20/person! After popcorn and treats, you’re spending almost that same amount going to a movie or play…but, let’s be honest, what’s the fun in celebrating an anniversary without laughter and conversation? Personally, I would love nothing more than to rally my husband in a round of laser tag. Bragging rights forever! It may take a few minutes to get into the swing of juvenile fun, but I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it soon enough. Plus, it’s a great excuse to eat greasy pizza or churros or soft, stuffed pretzels or even corn dogs! All offered at the Center’s cafe for great prices ($2.50-$16.00)

After leaving the amusement park, the fun doesn’t have to stop. Book a night at the Anniversary Inn in Logan and request the Player’s Clubhouse Suite. Along with the standard cozy bed and jacuzzi tub, this suite includes a Foosball table, putting green, and large, flat screen TV. Lose that game of bowling to your competitive spouse that won’t let it go? Challenge her to a “friendly” game of Foosball and show her who rules. At the end of the night, you two may be so exhausted from all the fun, you’ll be dying to take a tub in the large, heart-shaped jacuzzi reserved just for you. It’s your anniversary after all! With all the fun and games, there is still plenty of room for romance.

The concept of “staycation” is simple. Take your sweetheart on a vacation without ever leaving home. How is this accomplished?
